Has it LEFT your WRITE hand?

It has been such a long time since I have HANDWRITTEN something. Feels good to hold a pen again, but somehow my handwriting does not look as good as it used to be. I used to be one of the best in my class as far as drawing and handwriting was concerned. I think I still draw as well, but the quality of my handwriting has certainly taken a nosedive.

Pens and Pencils just ruled my life during school. Fountain pens were a rage then, until ball-pens took over. Then came college where REYNOLDS pens hung in my pockets. They came cheap and with the pocket money I used to get, I could only envy people who flaunted Pierre cardins, Parkers et al.

My pens served their purposes although their use started declining when I started studying computers. Most of our practical assignments were computer print-outs. But yeah, for our theory exams pens answered the questions. Pencils drew the diagrams in some papers.

College got over, and professional life started. Pens were still used but mostly for filling up forms, signing rent agreements, sometimes for writing pseudo-code or ideas while programming or simply for doodling while attending boring training sessions.

Now, with the advent of these online forms and stuff, the pen’s use is further decreased. No wonder that, I have to make a conscious effort to write with a pen. Take for instance, this post which I wrote with a pen first and then typed in on my PC.

Hi Prashant,

Nice post and very very true. I recently came across some letters my grandfather had written to me. Now that he is no more. These letters are very precious to me, especially as a reminder to all the milestone in my life (10th, 12th exams, job, etc) :). Reading them again brought back sweet memories of my “Muthachan”. I have now decided to write letters to my cousins instead of just phoning them or dropping an email. Handwritten stuff are more personal than typed letters!!

@Nandini: Thanks for the comment and yes I agree that handwritten stuff is more personal. Letters ought to be handwritten. All we need is, our postal department to speed up the delivery process. :-)

I still use my Pen Prashant. I jot down my thoughts as and when I have the time....if I get an interesting idea for a blog, I note it down...and occassionally also build on it with my pen...nevertheless, I agree that our professional lives have now ensured that we communicate at the click of a button...yes, this does make communication more frequent and faster....but it makes it impersonal, isnt it?? Well thought of and well written, as always.

Just so that you know Prashant...a few weeks ago...I used the pen to write an 8 page letter (full scape pages, OK!!!) to my beloved...!!!! And I can assure you that an 800 MB mail wouldnt have elicited the response which the 8 page letter did!!!!

Hey Prashant,

Loved the thought presented in your blog--it put me into thinking mode cuz I could relate to what you wrote.

Nandini's comment reminded me of my Nanaji. He used to send us one postcard letter almost every alternate day. Really! :)
Obviously, most of the letters had repeated content. But still, we waited for his letters and he kept sending them until he became old enough to be unable to write. He used to regularly call us every Sunday mornings too. And guess what he spoke of in the call? Well yes,he repeated everything that he wrote in the letters. He is a sweetheart!:)

Back to your blog-What I liked best about this blog is that you didn't try to advocate your thoughts or sound too judgemental suggesting "We must use pen atleast twice a week" or something like that :) :) It was simple and straight from the heart. Great going!!

You draw? Please feel free to exhibit ur skills on the easel kept in office.. :)
BTW, the weblog itself defeats the whole purpose of maintaining a diary right? The diary that I used to maintain in school shows how my handwriting has matured over the years. Thankfully my handwriting somehow hasn't yet degraded. Something to boast about. Yay!

Yes Gunjan I draw, but at leisure; which is not there in office. BTW you are free to showcase your handwriting at the easel. I did see some people writing or rather scribbling something on the board in the name of drawing. :-)
